  • Location: Located on the north-west shore of Lake Superior, the City of Thunder Bay is built around the harbour of the largest inland port in Canada. Under the watchful gaze of the majestic Sleeping Giant, this home for 110,000 people is served by major and regional airlines, bus service, and the Trans-Canada Highway. Year-round, Thunder Bay acts as the centre of a vast recreational and cultural area offering access to a wide variety of sports and activities. With two Alpine and two world-class Nordic ski centres in the area, as well as excellent curling and hockey facilities, and endless outdoor activities like fat biking, ice climbing, dogsledding and ice fishing, winter is no time to hibernate in Thunder Bay. Summer activities include sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing, rock climbing, swimming, jogging, cycling, camping, fishing, hiking and golf which abound in and around numerous lakes in the area. Program Description

AEP is designed for international students to prepare for future academic studies. Our program targets all four language areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students will improve their ability to read academic materials, write essays, take notes, and give presentations.

With the successful completion of this program's highest level (Level 5), you will meet the English language requirement for most Lakehead University undergraduate and graduate programs without further English Proficiency Test Scores of IELTS (6.5) or TOEFL (80) or equivalent.

Students with a conditional admission limited to language proficiency who are placed in level 5 may take one academic course at the undergraduate level for credit concurrently with their AEP course. However, course options are limited.

Program Description

Civil Engineering is a diverse discipline that involves the planning, design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure such as buildings, bridges, highways and natural systems. Basically, you will learn to provide and improve the services the public utilizes every day.

Civil Engineering is composed of several sub-disciplines including:

  • Structural
  • Geotechnical
  • Environmental
  • Transportation
  • Water Resources
  • Construction Project Management 

Our faculty members are specialists in their subfield, providing information on the most current theories and practices to ensure you graduate with cutting-edge experience in the industry.

Our Faculty of Engineering offers a unique four-year Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering, accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), with an optional co-operative education component.  

NOTE:  Almost all Lakehead University programs are designed with courses that require successful completion of a a Fall session prerequisite course. As a result, students who choose to begin their academic studies in the Winter session will find the course selection extremely limited and will be restricted to attending on a part-time basis until the following Fall academic session.  Most study permits require that the applicant is a full-time student. Because of this, It is recommended that students apply for a September start.

  • English Proficiency Requirements:
    For direct admission, applicant must be from an English speaking country or meet either of the following English test scores:

    • Min IELTS overall: 6.5 (Min Reading: 6.0, Min Writing: 6.0, Min Listening: 6.0, Min Speaking: 6.0)
    • Min Duolingo English Test Score: 110
    NOTE: Applicants interested in applying for direct admission, but are yet to complete an acceptable language test, can do so, but must provide valid results before receiving a final offer letter.
    For conditional admission, instead of submitting language proficiency test scores, applicant may complete English courses prior to the academic program. The length of the English course is determined based on the applicant's level of English proficiency.

Program Description

Anthropology is the broad, multi-disciplinary study and documentation of humans, past and present. As an Anthropology student you will have the opportunity to study everything from stone artifacts and skeletal remains, to a community's economic structure and unique dialect. Our Department of Anthropology has four distinct sub-disciplines with many different topics to explore in each:
  • Archaeology
  • Bioanthropology
  • Linguistics
  • Socio-Cultural Anthropology 
Our courses blend in-class lecture with seminars, labs and field work to provide you with a well-rounded background in both the theoretical and practical applications of your area of interest. You will have access to world-class laboratories and anthropological collections which have contributed to groundbreaking findings and been utilized by some of the foremost leaders in the field.
 
Our faculty members are active and innovative researchers on an international scale, which is reflected in our renowned undergraduate research opportunities. Our faculty members regularly work with undergraduate students on special topics courses and projects, many of whom have presented their findings at various national archaeological conferences and established themselves very early in their careers. 
 
Additionally, we run a field school over the summer to provide hands-on training in archaeological excavation, laboratory analysis, material culture identification and mapping. These field schools typically take place in Northwestern Ontario, however we have partnerships with organizations in Croatia, Israel and Italy should you wish to choose a unique destination to supplement your studies.
